Getting there

The R5 regional train leaves from Plaza Espanya station every hour. Two options:

  • Rack railway (cremallera): leave train at Monistrol de Montserrat, take the historic rack railway up. Slower, more scenic, more comfortable.
  • Cable car (aeri): leave train at Aeri de Montserrat, take the aerial cable car. Faster, more dramatic, not for anyone scared of heights.

At the monastery

The Benedictine basilica is free to enter. The Black Madonna (Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia) is in an alcove above the main altar with a separate queue to touch the orb she holds. L'Escolania boys choir sings the Salve at 12:00 noon and 6:45 PM Monday-Saturday. Plan around this, it is the highlight.

Beyond the monastery

Funicular Sant Joan goes up to hiking trails with the best panoramic views. Funicular Santa Cova drops to the cave chapel where the Black Madonna was originally found. Both cost €10 round-trip and are included in some combo tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Take R5 train from Plaza Espanya metro station to either Monistrol de Montserrat (for the rack railway, scenic) or Aeri de Montserrat (for the cable car, faster). Combined round-trip tickets including the mountain funiculars cost €24-32.

Yes, especially if you have 3+ days in Barcelona. The combination of the monastery, the dramatic landscape and the boys choir singing at noon makes it one of the best day trips in Europe. In 2 days, Montserrat may stretch the itinerary too thin.

Minimum 4 hours on the mountain: monastery basilica, Black Madonna queue, choir at noon, one funicular up to viewpoints. Add 1 hour each way for the train. A full day allows proper hiking plus the museum.
